Fresh batch of SHEA BUTTER
…..and how to make it:
Ingredients: Shea Butter, olive oil and a few drops of
essential oil. The latter is not vital but the shea butter has a natural nutty
smell. Which not everybody likes, the same goes for olive oil.
One has to use a water bath
to smelt the shea butter and the olive oil (or other favourite plant oil) together
in a water bath (bain marie) until they are well “married” and +- 70 degree Celsius.
The mixture will then be clear and look like oil, nice and rich amber, happily united
as an emulsion.
Then you take the mixture out of the
water bath and start stirring it really well, stir, stir, stir until it is
cooler and starting to turn thicker and lighter. This is the time when the
essential oil –drop by drop- can be added, not before, as the higher
temperature will let it evaporate. Essential oil is strong and 8 drops per 500
ml is enough. If you feel like adding more, do not be tempted, it will burn
your skin.
When the mixture thickens a little
more you can start pouring it into your jar(s). It will then settle down in the
pot and turn a very light, lovely shadow of shea butter and olive oil (
surprise ) yellow and smell like a Tuscan citrus plantatation.
On the 16th of May 2013 I
posted a detailed report about the magical workings of shea butter cream on skin
and hair.

And other very good
news is that spring has sprung in
South Africa.
I picked the above just now for all my
friends to see and enjoy the daisies, honeysuckle, jasmine, wild peach and
little lion’s mouth.
Greetings and joy and
peace from Barbara
